Peroneal Tendinosis
Put an End to Your Ankle Pain at The Podiatry Center
If you are experiencing pain or swelling in the back of your ankle, then you may be suffering from peroneal tendinosis. Our ankle specialists can help you determine whether your pain is the result of peroneal tendinosis or another painful ankle condition. Once your pain has been properly diagnosed, we can then help you back on the road to recovery with our treatment for peroneal tendinosis in Bethesda, MD, and Springfield, VA.
What Is Peroneal Tendinosis?
The peroneal tendon runs along the back of your ankle, connecting muscle to bone. Peroneal tendinosis happens when overuse or overexertion causes your peroneal tendon to thicken or swell. In the past, this type of problem has been misnamed peroneal tendinitis. However, since the tendon typically thickens and has not been invaded by inflammatory cells, tendinosis is the more correct term for this condition.
How Can You Treat Peroneal Tendinosis?
The good news is that surgery is rare for peroneal tendinosis. Our ankle specialists often recommend a variety of conservative treatment approaches, including rest, an ankle brace, and – in very painful cases – a walking boot. Our team can also help you analyze your footwear and exercise routine to identify ways to avoid a recurrence of your ankle pain in the future.
